About Australian Review of Applied Linguistics

Aims and scope

The Australian Review of Applied Linguistics (ARAL) is the journal of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA). The aim of the journal is to present research in a wide range of areas, but in particular research that is relevant to the particular region of the world that it covers. The journal aims to promote the development of links between language related research and its application in educational, professional, and other language related settings.

Areas that are covered by the journal include first and second language teaching and learning, bilingualism and bilingual education, the use of technologies in language teaching and learning, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, translation and interpreting, language testing, language planning, academic literacies and rhetoric.

ARAL is a peer reviewed journal. Research articles are reviewed anonymously by members of the editorial board and guest reviewers.

Publication information

From volume 29 (2006), ARAL is being published online as well as in print, by Monash University ePress on behalf of ALAA. Previous issues were published by ALAA itself, in print format only.

Prior to 2006, two issues of ARAL were published each year as well as a special thematic issue known as 'Series S'. However, from 2007 the Series S publication has been incorporated into ARAL itself, and so three issues of the journal will be published each year: two regular issues and one thematic issue. Subscribers will receive access to each of these issues. There was no Series S publication in 2006.

Back issues and other publications produced by ALAA

Issues of ARAL published prior to 2006, including the Series S publications, were published in print format only and as such have not been archived on the ePress website. For inquiries about back issues, please contact the Secretary of ALAA.

ALAA also publishes a newsletter and Occasional Papers. These are produced directly by ALAA and are not available on the ePress website. For information about the newsletter and Occasional Papers, and for information about the AILA Review, which ALAA distributes to its members, please contact the Secretary of ALAA.
